Indigenous Health Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative

Question: Discuss about theIndigenous Health for Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative. Answer: Population Profile Introduction Health communication is defined as the mass or interpersonal communication activities that aim at ensuring improved health of individuals. Effective and respectful health care and way of life is a desire of every individual. Engaging in respectful and effective communication is vital in the process of delivering health services to the indigenous communities. This paper presents a key analysis of Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative and the health services it provides to the aboriginal communities within the region in regard to effective health care service delivery. The paper articulates the services or the organization concerning the wellbeing and the welfare of the community and with focus on the indigenous health care and professional development. Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative (BADAC) is an Aboriginal community controlled organization found in the Ballarat district area, in the Gold field and the Central Highlands regions of Victoria in Australia on the latitudes 14352'1"E and the longitude 3733'49"S. The organization is strategically located in the highlands of Central Victoria approximately 110km to the northwest of Melbourne City. Ballarat district is one of the largest Australian inland cities with a population of over 95, 000 in 2016 and an annual population increase of 1.48%. The demographics also show that out of the 100, 237 individuals, 77% are considered to be aboriginal that also increase by 7.4 % every year majorly by birth. The local traditional custodians of the Ballarat district were the Wathaurung people who with time led to the formation of the Ballarat Aboriginal Co-operative organization (Hannessy, 2016). The organization served as an incorporated organization from 1979. It was established with a major aim of providing assistance to the Aboriginal people in the district of Ballarat. The organization is charged to deal with issues concerning welfare, housing, and health. From the time of its formation, it has grown considerably and currently delivers a range of services to the Aboriginal communities such as culture, education, social well-being, art, welfare, and health. The organization also offers a wide range of services as underpinned by the adoption of its social inclusion principles that incorporates cultural connection programs, vacation programs, administration, children support, and active lifestyle. With a client-centered approach, Ballarat focuses on the early prevention and intervention to ensure their aboriginal clients are personally engaging in the nurturing and development of their futures and well-being (BADAC, 2016). Indeginous Health Service Self-determination is the right of an individual to freely pursue or determine their political, social, economic, and cultural development status. According to Austin (2013), self-determination is a collective right and not an individual right. The claim by the self-determination on the indigenous people thus raises the questions of whether the indigenous groups have the right of breaking from the existing nation or whether they satisfy the definition of people. In Australia, the right of self-determination requires the recognition by the government of their cultural norms, social organizations, decision-making, and governance. Self-determination is hence essential as it gives the aboriginal communities the freedom of decision-making towards issues affecting them such as their health services. Additionally, self-determination also gives the indigenous communities a general understanding of the essential principles of self-determination that can affect the communities and their healthcare. The understanding of the self-determination principles, the aboriginal communities get the power to competently accept or make decisions concerning their health conditions so as to promote healthcare services that promote their health and well-being. In their study, Wilmott and Knox (2012) point out that self-determination enables things to happen in an individuals life without letting others work out things for them. The professionals and the aboriginal communities who are aware of what they want hence have the opportunity of setting out goals and work towards reaching the goals. The can advocate on their health issues and make decisions towards solving the challenges they face as aboriginal communities in Australia. In their study on the overview of the indigenous health services, Halloy (2016) denotes that the vision of Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative is to ensure the achievement of self-determination for the aboriginal communities living in the area. The vision is aimed at enabling stronger families with equal opportunities for housing, health, education, justice, and employment through a culturally holistic and relevant approach. The organization has thus adopted different social inclusion challenges and problems of the indigenous communities as its major principles of underpinning its service delivery, strategic vision, as well as program development activities leading towards the self-determination of the communities. These guiding principles were hence developed by the key stakeholders of the organizations such as elders, staff, external agencies, management, and the BADAC aboriginal community as a whole (BADAC, 2016). Summary of the Range of Programs and Services for the Local Community According to Wilmot and Knox (2012), without adequate housing, the general emotional well-being and health are at higher risk. As a result, other social issues such as relationships become very difficult to manage. Such challenges also make it difficult for other people to make the most out of employment opportunities and education that can benefit them and their families. Ballarat hence supports home ownership as it is a concrete start in raising the living standard and quality of life to the aboriginal population. The members are thus given financial opportunities for securing the ownership of their rental property. The organization thus aims at assisting the community who face hardship as a result of emergencies and crisis that end up making others temporary homeless. Ballarat has increased the development of other mainstream health services. These include Yanikan-Merritt Center for vocational programs, Cultural Education Centers for cultural connections, Koori Family Services Cen tre for mental health services, and Martin St for children support among other services within the district. Ballarat also carries out strategic communication framework as an essential driving force towards the social and economic well-being of the indigenous communities hence promoting a healthy lifestyle within the people. Strategic Health Communication Framework Health literacy has been global, nationally, and locally recognized as an essential factor influencing the safety and quality of healthcare provision among the indigenous communities. Durey et al. (2016) point out that effective and respectful communication is an essential factor in the process of understanding the illiteracy and health requirement among the communities. However, there is a considerable concern on how different individuals conceptualize the need for effective communication in healthcare provision among such communities. Linguistic and cultural diversity causes further complexity and thus requires a high degree of health care frameworks. Given the diverse indigenous population, language and culture are crucial components of responsive and effective healthcare provision. They influence not only the consumption level but also accommodate the needs of the healthcare service consumers. It is for this reason that cultural competency, communication competence, and cultural competence requires being systematically addressed at the international, national, and community level to ensure healthcare that can respond to the diverse needs of the indigenous communities. In their study, Thanmpson et al. (2015) point out that the competencies and frameworks cannot be met effectively without proper communication with the indigenous communities. Therefore, effectiveness in communication is vital as it contributes to the health and wellbeing of the Aboriginal communities in the various ways as denoted by Minichiello et al. (2016). It helps in understanding the relationship between cultural security, cultural competency, health literacy , and health communication as well as analysis of the implications of linguistic and cultural diversity for addressing the health care challenges affecting indigenous communities. Strategic health communication among the aboriginal communities is essential in adopting universal precaution approaches that can effectively meet their diverse health needs of the rather than focusing on the limitations of the communities towards better healthcare provision. It is thus vital in measuring the health literacy encompassing the literacy in indigenous health service provision and a healthy environment. Professional Development Professional development is essential in the attempt of increasing the cultural safety skills appropriate for caring for the indigenous people. According to Thampson et al. (2015), Professional development is essential for the integration of communication, health literacy, and cultural competence. This is essential in reflecting the extension of interrelation so as to enable appropriate actions in all the levels of healthcare among the aboriginal communities. In the process, having a clear and relevant understanding of the information relevant to the specific indigenous communities is also very essential for professional development. It gives a nursing professional the opportunity to understand the relationship between the cultural healthcare competencies, literacy, and strategic communication framework among the communities. McLennan and Khavarpour (2014) Point out that health is holistically viewed among the indigenous population and is inclusive of the cultural, social, emotional, and physical well-being of an individual. As a result, specific health issues as well as their contributing factors need to be assessed in the lives of the indigenous population as well as the resulting challenges as compared to the non-indigenous population. Nurses should hence create a supportive environment for healthcare delivery, strengthen aboriginal community action towards a healthy society, and develop effective personal and professional communication and healthcare delivery skills. Such strategies will help in supporting the building of a healthy public healthcare policy among the aboriginal communities. Conclusion There are many factors affecting the well-being of aboriginal communities in different parts of the world. Issues like poor housing, healthcare services, proper governance and justice, and self-determination are just a few of these factors that need to be addressed by different federal states and professionals. Responsible healthcare and the emotional well-being of the Aboriginal communities are some of the major issues affecting the aboriginal communities of Australia. For a nurse to effectively promote or contribute to professional development in the process of safe care delivery among indigenous communities, nurses can adopt different strategies geared towards achieving the goal. Health promotion among the indigenous communities requires a nurse to take into account the culture, socio-economic circumstances, population diversity, dialects and language, and geographic location among other factors. Exploratory Investigation of Integrated Contingency

Question: Discuss about the Exploratory Investigation of Integrated Contingency. Answer: Introduction Strategic Management is a field involving dynamic capabilities of the organization coupled with formation as well as implementation of major goals(Stacey, 2007). Strategies are generally made at the top level by senior level managers and leaders considering various resources, liabilities along with presence of internal and external conditions of the company. Strategic management involves studying of all analysis of internal and external conditions prevailing within the industry and then forming suitable strategies or plans which can be implemented accordingly. Strategies provide an overall direction to the company thereby encompassing the goals and objectives of the organization. These plans, policies as well as procedures formed for the organization are developed in accordance with resources and capabilities of the same. There are numerous models and theories that are developed in the field in order that organizations can formulate suitable strategies of their own. Ellen E. Chaffee (1985) have devised three explicit literature that categorizes strategies in three distinct groups as Model I, Linear Strategy, Model II, Adaptive Strategy and Model III Interpretive Strategy(Eden, 2013). Linear strategy approach of strategy is focused on planning which emphasizes on achievement of goals. This model of strategic management is based on Chandlers definition of strategy, which encompasses strategic direction in order to guide organizations in order that they are able to achieve goals. This approach to strategic management is more focused on competitive strategies such that organization can achieve leadership position. In Adaptive strategic approach the notion of incrementalism is coherent. In this case strategies are formed in accordance to developing a viable match amongst the risks and opportunities that an organization is exposed to from its external environment(Hitt, 2012). Here, organizational strategy is aligned to consumer preferences hence are altered frequently. In case of an Interpretive Strategy, a cognitive map of the external environment helps managers link external threats to organizational opportunities. Though these models of strategy are not mutually exc lusive yet, shortcoming of linear model involves persistence on long term planning. As primary aim of forming strategies is to extend capabilities of organizations, such long term planning might not render effectiveness. The scope of this report identifies various approaches to Strategic Management by stakeholder approach, dynamic capabilities and sustainable approach, viability and limitations for the same(Ansoff, 2007). Different approaches to Strategic Management Strategies are developed and designed by organizations to extend their capabilities which emerge as core competency in the market. Such establishing of capabilities entail development of competitive advantage for the company(Hill et al., n.d.). While selecting an approach to strategic management choice, organizational leaders evaluate a number of factors. While an approach might not be mutually exclusive from another, but selecting an appropriate approach for the organizational lets develop a focus and draws attention thereupon. Hence, for every organization while selecting and in adopting a strategy it becomes pertinent to diagnose the primary or the important aspect for their organization. Amongst three different approaches, stakeholder approach, dynamic capabilities approach and sustainable approach while each aspect remains integral factor for organization it becomes pertinent to diagnose each ones viability, suitability and adaptability to the situation such that appropriate res ults can be obtained(Chesbrough, 2007). Stakeholder approach Stakeholder approach or theory towards strategic management was identified way back by R. Edward Freeman(Freeman, 2010). The majority focus of this approach is on stakeholders, internal and external in nature. Stakeholders consist of individuals who have active interests and participate in the business of the organization. Internal stakeholders include those internal to the organization, as management, leaders, employees, shareholders, staffs, workers and so on. They take active role and play an integral part in decision making as well as routine functioning for the organization. External stakeholder includes stakeholders who are outside the organization as customers, suppliers, vendors, distributors, government, rating agencies, other agencies and so on. External stakeholders do not take active part in the business but are involved in day to day functioning for the same(Furrer, 2008). In stakeholder approach it is recommended that an organization considers its stakeholders perspectives while forming or adopting a suitable strategy for itself. Stakeholders especially those who are shareholders of the company are owners and have vested interests in the functioning of the business. In this theory it is identified that a company needs to put stakeholders needs as a priority and it is their fiduciary responsibility. Stressing on the need of the stakeholders will help organizations increase the value for their organization overall(Cadez, 2008). The scope of this theory argues that stakeholders affect capacities of a business to perform, hence they needs to be given adequate importance. Further stakeholders view for strategy lets an organization integrate resource based view along with market based approach along with socio-political levels. Stakeholders approach is extremely important as it stresses on the stakeholders thinking as well as their strategic contribution in functioning of the organization. This approach has gained immense importance in corporate social responsibility approach of the organization as well(Klein, 2009). In Stakeholder approach to Strategic Management an organization is likely to stretch its capabilities as well as resources in order to gain significant profits for its shareholders. This approach might be at the cost of the putting tremendous pressures on resources. Dynamic capabilities This approach to strategic management was devised by David Teece, Amy Shuen and Gary Pisano(1997)(Teece, 2009). The theory stresses on the concept of resource base of the organization in order that they are able to build, integrate internal capabilities to match external threats and opportunities. These capabilities of the organization help to cope with dynamic changing environment. There are various capabilities of every organization that acts as core competency for them and extends their competitive advantage in the market. The term dynamic capabilities relate to the idea of operational efficiency for the organization, such operational capabilities need to rapidly transform and respond to the changing environmental needs by operational effectiveness as well as resources. The central idea around this concept was adopted by Amy Shuen, wherein it was assumed that competencies within organizations create short-term competitive advantage which can be transformed into long-term advantage s for the organization(Schot, 2008)(Johnson, 2013). Dynamic Capabilities Approach stresses its focus on capabilities within an organization. In such an instance there might be loss at a certain point incurring for the organization, in order to dynamically rearrange its resources to suit capabilities and meet needs. Sustainable approach Increasingly growing concern regarding various impacts and effects created organizations are becoming the central idea of their business leadership. Business leaders around the world in order to develop their sustainability are rapidly transforming their business and adopting norms that depict a positive branding for the organization. There are three aspects of sustainability namely, environment, future generations needs and economy(Ambrosini, 2009). An organization adopting this feature of sustainability approach develops strategies to thrive by maintaining the three aspects. Strategies are formed such that organizations are able to attend to scarce resource depletion, reduce wastages, reduce carbon footprints and other environmental impact along with creating a positive effect on the community or society in which it is operational(Kaplan, 2007). Strategies designed in accordance to these procedures entail that they adopt sustainable practices in each and every aspect of organizatio nal procedures. Sustainability approach maintains ability for creating future sustainable generations on this planet. An organization adopting sustainable approach will generally tend to source its raw materials in a responsible manner from a replenishable source. Further it will try and reduce wastages or recycle them, avoiding unnecessary energy wastages or environmental impacts(Thompson, 2010). It will also try and create positive impact on the society or community in which it is present by way of giving back much more than it takes. Sustainable management practices are generally adopted in all spheres of environmental and sociological impact. In this technique an organization is not regarded as an entity formed for the sole purpose of reaping profits or for the sake of earning returns for its shareholders or owners. This approach covers a broader aspect that entails creating a wider impact in the minds of all stakeholders especially on customers(Holcomb, 2007). Customers have been found to be mo re inclined towards a responsible organization that adopts sustainable practices and policies compared to an organization that does not. Organizations that adopt this procedure and responsibilities often adopt sustainable practices in their marketing as well, and its central promotional strategy revolves around this concept. Thus, strategy for these type of organizations are formed by considering impacts from its various endeavors from manufacturing, to distribution, to marketing and so on(Wheelen Hunger, 2011). Sustainability approach touches every sphere of strategy formation for the organization that adopts and pertains to this approach. According to Sustainability Approach, an organization puts immense pressure on creating a sustainable impact by its various actions. In this case stakeholders objectives or allocating of dynamic capabilities become secondary factors considering this approach. Conclusions Strategic management entails adoption of various approaches and concepts that are used and applied across businesses. Each of the three approaches in strategic management stakeholders approach, dynamic capabilities and sustainability approach are viable in their own respect. While they cannot act as mutually exclusive they are found to often overlap with each other. In stakeholders approach it is assumed that organization will follow and form strategies that are in interests of all its stakeholders, easier said than applied. Various stakeholders of the organization can have various different prerogatives and objectives as well as vision for the organization. Hence, while similar objectives as growth and development, technological adaptation objectives might clash and be similar, other objectives especially employee leaves and other perspectives might clash. Thus, in order that this strategy is viable, organization needs to adopt and apply strategies that arise from popular perspectiv es avoiding those that might have a long-term negative impact on the organization. The possible benefit of this approach is active participation and motivation for various business stakeholders, especially internal ones. This strategy generally has minimum number of implementation issue as against other approaches as this type of strategy is generally designed from the organization by considering various stakeholders views. Dynamic capabilities approach is high viable and organization does need to rearrange their resources and capabilities such that they are able to adapt to changing times for the organization. Sustainability approach is increasingly getting prominence in multiple organizations and its highly viable. Information in regards to various impacts created by various different actions of the organization is raising curiosity amongst customers, who are concerned regarding the purchases that they make. Thus, it is viable as well as profitable for businesses to adopt and apply approaches of sustainable nature. Limitations Each approach has their own limitations along with their own benefits. While Stakeholder approach might be beneficial to the stakeholders, especially internal ones it might not act in the interests of the capabilities the organization possesses. One major limitation of this approach is in its underestimating of other factors of the organization especially in regards to capabilities. While Stakeholders Approach is a traditional approach and focuses on owners of the organization, hence it becomes the primary responsibility of such organizations to deliver profits to these owners. Thus, while delivering profits other aspects of the organization that might be crucial for the functioning of the same might get overlooked. Dynamic capabilities approach stresses immense importance on existing capabilities of the firm and hence overlooks the aspects of organizational capability expansion. While forming strategy according to this approach an organization might actually lag behind its competitors in rearranging its capabilities. Further this theory is incompetent in markets where sustainability or stakeholders as customers plays a central role. Sustainability approach to strategic management is a contemporary approach and is now getting adopted in various organizations. This aspect often burdens the organization with excessive costs that barely have any impact on profitability. Though this is a long ranged approach organizations adopting this strategy might be initially at a loss for various changes and processes that it needs to incorporate. Thus, it can be drawn from the above approaches and concepts that strategic management is a process and approach for which needs to be integrated such that organization is able to establish itself as a leader. The core aim of adopting strategic management concepts, theories and processes is that the organization can advance its competitive advantage by expanding core capabilities of the firm. Crime And Punishment Essays (326 words) - Literature, Fiction

Crime And Punishment Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is the story of a poor man in czarist Russia who can only purge himself of his guilt through suffering. It deals with the mental and physical tribulation brought upon him by his crime. His troubles are compounded by the conflicting personalities which he possesses. The reader is inclined to characterize him by his cold, intellectual side. Yet, without the contrasting humane side of his nature, Raskolnikov never realizes the errors in his theory and actions. Raskolnikov is defined by the duplistic nature of his personality, with each facet being just as vital as the other. Raskolnikov's cold side leads him to develop his theory, and thus to commit murder. This side of him bases all decisions on reason and rationalization (although it is sometimes incorrect), rather than on feeling. It is purely stoical, without emotion. The other side of his character is kind and compassionate. Without this side being presented the reader views him as an evil murderer, and not a mislead victim, as Dostoevsky intends. In the novel Raskolnikov engages in sporadic acts of kindness. He gives money to the Marmeladov family, he attempts to aid Marmeladov when he dies, and he tries to get a drunken girl home and away from her pursuer. All of these deeds were done without premeditation. He simply feels that at the time it is the right thing to do. After a short period of time his outlook dramatically reverses. He starts to rationally analyze what he has done, and then feels that his actions were stupid. This transition marks the return of his cold side, and it occurs after every kind thing that Raskolnikov does. These shifts between two distinct personalities give Raskolnikov two separate points of view. The novel is founded on the distinctions between the two points of view, and the reader gets both angles. Both Raskolnikov's generous, and evil actions are essential to his character because they allow the reader to identify with these two points of view and the two facets of his personality. Below you will find a sample essay on one of the topics above which you can use as a helpful aid in writing your own piece: Sample Argumentative Essay on the Mixture of Religion with Philosophy Religion and philosophy have been the major factors in determining human culture since the dawn of time. Many different religions and schools of thought have had an enormous impact on the evolution of the world. Throughout the world, many philosophies have become religions when changes in political or social landscapes brought forth education changes and demands for new ways of thinking. This was very true of Asian philosophies and educations. Buddhism is both a religion and a philosophy, though it is more a way of life than anything. Buddhism started in 563 BC. Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was the founder. The core tenets of Buddhism include karma, rebirth, and the journey of the soul toward enlightenment. Islam is the most popular religion in the world today. Islam began on the Arabian Peninsula during the sixth century. It was founded by Muhammad, the prophet, and spread rapidly throughout the world. The tents of Islam touch on every aspect of human life, but it can be considered a monotheistic religion, which shares the roots of Judaism and Christianity. However, Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the unaltered word of God, and that other religious books (the Bible and the Torah) have become corrupted. Confucianism is a philosophy that was birthed in China. This philosophy focuses on improving and perfecting humanity through teaching, as well as the cultivation of virtue and moral perfection. Judaism is the parent religion of Christianity and is the official faith of the Jewish people. Judaism can be traced back more than 3,000 years and is one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world. Like Islam, Judaism touches on every aspect of a person’s life, depending on their type of Judaism- reformed, orthodox, or conservative. Religion has played an enormous role in world history, and many events that have taken place can be attributed to religion in some way. For instance, the Crusades were motivated by religion (at least ostensibly), with Christians seeking to liberate the Holy City of Jerusalem from Muslims. The Reformation and the ensuing wars were also brought about by religion, with strife among Christians. Germany’s population was reduced by up to 50% during this period. The Holocaust also had religious implications, as the Nazis were very anti-Judaism. One of the most important ways religion has influenced world history was through the development, control, and domination of trade routes. In this instance, religion was used as a means to gain control of areas where valuable trade routes lay. By spreading one religion through an area, a nation could more easily come in and take control of that trade route from another nation with a different religion. Christianity was used to this end during the Middle Ages. References Confucianism.  local (2011): n. pag. Web. A E.,.  Confucious: Words Of Wisdom. A E. Print. CHENG, CHUNG-YING. Nature and nurture Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Nature and nurture - Research Paper Example Some people also argue that both have an equal share in developing a child. Essentially, the question is, which of the two influences the children more, their biological and genetic circumstances i.e. nature, or their socioeconomic environment, peer associations and parenting skills i.e. nurture? Most experts are of the view that both the nature and nurture play a big role in the child’s cognitive, social and physical development, though there is little to no information regarding the degree to which either of the two participates in the processes of development. This essay aims at discussing the influence of nature and nurture on babies. Nowadays, people generally understand the relationship between nature and nurture. Babies are obviously influenced by both nature and nurture. Nature and nurture play mixed roles in the development of a baby's speech. The nature part of it is that the baby is bourn with the ability to learn the skill of making speech. On the other hand, the e nvironment in which a child grows up causes the child to start speaking within one to two years. The reason why babies start to speak when they are as little as one year old is that their brain is not complete. For example, children who grow up in the middle class of America start to speak when they are only one year old in comparison to the children that live in San Marcos village in Guantanamo, who take quite longer to begin speaking.

Make one up Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2

Make one up - Essay Example Religion has turned out to be one of the most influential parties in the issue of abortion. The laws of the land cannot also be ignored as they try to harmonize social issues and accommodate or reject abortion. On the same note, the pagans’ say on the matter has as well counted. All these aspects combined make abortion a complex issue across all known divides. The most important aspect in this case, however, is what the Goddess says about abortion. The Goddess holds abortion as one of the many forms of sacrifice. In this case, sacrifice practices are seen as a way of choosing between life and death. Most importantly, sacrifices are important to the Goddess. The more sacrifices humans make to the Goddess, the happier and satisfied she becomes. Those who sacrifice are also viewed as persons who can make essential decisions in life. The Goddess accepts sacrifices of many forms, and those made through abortion are just part of the sacrifice system. Abortion is all about love. Women who engage in abortion make sacrifices to the Goddess. This is a sign of love to the Goddess. On the other hand, women abort for varied reasons, all of which seem to conform to the Goddess’s system of taking sacrifices. In doing so, these women show their love in the death of the fetus. They have predetermined reasons to do so, a phenomenon that is held to be better for the unborn. As a result, abortion in this case becomes a way of expressing love to the unborn by women who abort. While religion would not hold any of the above to be the truth, the religion of the Goddess holds that some religions do not do women any good. This is evidenced by â€Å"the militant wing that identified patriarchal religion as the root of the problem of women subordination† (Stewart 280). The Goddess upholds the freedoms and rights of women, thereby countering the problem of subordination of women that is said to exist in patriarchal religion. Expression of love to

History of Western Civilization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

History of Western Civilization - Essay Example The key enlightenment figures began with sets of philosophers that began to perceive reality in an alternative manner. Descartes and Lebiniz were two of the leading figures with the concept of self – evident reasons to create ideals. This was followed with concepts such as through Newton, with created a scientific basis that experience and experiment were the two formations of knowledge, as opposed to reason and belief. The philosophies continued with the artists of the time, such as Voltaire, who created the belief that science should be regarded as ahead of the metaphysical. Each of the philosophers during this time based the Enlightenment on reason as opposed to spirituality and belief that was practiced in the culture (Porter, 3). The concept of the enlightenment was followed by scientists, politicians and religious leaders who either accepted or rejected the notion of reason and science being before belief. The scientists were split into several groups that experimented i n different ways. For instance, the materialists, such as La Mettrie, created an understanding of how the mind and the soul coincided and how the physical was a reflection of the spiritual. David Hume, Darwin and Newton followed this with disagreements that led into the practical, such as basic physics and mechanics of how the world worked. This was followed by politicians, such as Adam Smith and William Burke, which believed that science should be combined with politics for more practical and reasonable associations with the functioning of society (Porter, 25). The goal of the enlightenment figures was to take out the superstition and beliefs that led society. The main association was to create an understanding of abstract reason. It was believed that the power of reason could create a status quo that could lead into a Utopian future. The beliefs were followed by the understanding that those who used reason and rationalization for all concepts could easily find a way to reform soci ety and culture. The reason was one which was required to come from scientific discoveries and beliefs which gave a physical and practical understanding to how the world worked and what was done in the world. Within these thoughts were several associations with how this related to production. The reason was followed by scientists who were focused on discovering and observing attributes in nature as well as politicians and philosophers that were finding reasonable ways to rule and guide society and culture into new forms of knowledge (Porter, 2). The concept of reason that the key thinkers in the Enlightenment held also led to specific ideologies about religion. Most believed that religion was led by superstition and ignorance, as opposed to having knowledge about how the world functioned. This was followed by the concept of having a sense of freedom for religion. The historical time frame had led society into forced religion, specifically with the Catholic Church. This was followed by outbreaks that divided the church into sectors. During this time, there was a movement forward with the belief that religion should be free choice. Most who were considered a leader in the Enlightenment didn’t believe in Church based concepts and instead insisted that they were evils of society. Instead, there was a belief in a natural religion that allowed free thought and natural

By received government funding, there should have a network of 8 desktop computers within Internet connection. Assumed there are not mixed class in the computer room. There should be six groups totally. So the total user of the computer room is around forty two persons. Install two interactive whiteboards for classroom use and a networked laser printer is enough . I suggested the school should be install Windows XP as the operating system, make sure it is easier to maintenance and have much more higher compatibility in the software market. They also should have an off the shelf database for school administration. For example, teacher can keep the student attendance records at classes and keep the marks for tests, exams and assignments etc. Access in Microsoft office 2003 is suitable for the case. Because it have a higher performance, lower price with patched version. Two interactive whiteboards are also let the teaching staff to show the teaching materials which they find out from the Internet . In my own opinion, follow the whole project planning. The installation and working should be complete within six months successfully . Cost-effectiveness analysis is distinct from cost benefit analysis, which assigns a monetary value to the measure of effect .Cost effectiveness analysis is often used in the field of health services, where it may be inappropriate to monetize health effect. Typically the CEA is expressed in terms of a ratio where the denominator is a gain in health from a measure ( years of life, premature births averted, sight-years gained ) and the numerator is the cost associated with the health gain. The most commonly used outcome measure is quality-adjusted life years. Cost utility analysis is similar to cost-effectiveness analysis . Risk Assessment Risk assessment consists in an objective evaluation of risk in which assumptions and uncertainties are clearly considered and presented. Part of the difficulty of risk management is that measurement of both of the quantities in which risk assessment is concerned potential loss and probability of occurrence can be very difficult to measure. The chance of error in the measurement of these two concepts is large. A risk with a large potential loss and a low probability of occurring is often treated differently from one with a low potential loss and a high likelihood of occurring. In theory, both are of nearly equal priority in dealing with first, but in practice it can be very difficult to manage when faced with the scarcity of resources, especially time, in which to conduct the risk management process. Expressed mathematically . In auditing, risk assessment is a very crucial stage before accepting an audit engagement. According to ISA315 Understanding the Entity and its Environment and Assessing the Risks of Material Misstatement, the auditor should perform risk assessment procedures to obtain an understanding of the entity and its environment, including its internal control. There are two methods of risk assessment in information security field, qualitative and quantitative. Purely quantitative risk assessment is a mathematical calculation based on security metrics on the asset ( system or application ). Qualitative risk assessment is performed when the organization requires a risk assessment be performed in a relatively short time or to meet a small budget, a significant quantity of relevant data is not available, or the persons performing the assessment dont have the sophisticated mathematical, financial, and risk assessment expertise required. Qualitative risk assessment can be performed in a shorter period of time and with less data. Qualitative risk assessments are typically performed through interviews of a sample of personnel from all relevant groups within an organization charged with the security of the asset being assessed. Qualitative risk assessments are descriptive versus measurable . Number Case of risk solution recommendation 1 Lost data Purchase a backup tape drive See whether have budget or not after government funding 2 Computer repair Join maintenance Join maintenance after the third year 3 Abuse the computer and room facilities Limit the computer room open time Nominate some student leader to look after it 4 PC performance lower Upgrade parts in future See the cost of parts in future if necessary 5 Lost leakage Purchase encryption software See the cost of parts in future if necessary TASK2 The main activities to be undertaken in the project is shown as follow. The life cycle of it can be a waterfall diagram ( Table 2 .1 ) . Requirement Analysis Specification Analysis Design Code unit test Integration Test Staff training System acceptance test Table 2 .1 In Table 2. 1, show how the project run, it is a waterfall model. The waterfall development model has its origins in the manufacturing and construction industries; highly structured physical environments in which after-the-fact changes are prohibitively costly, if not impossible. Since no formal software development methodologies existed at the time, this hardware-oriented model was simply adapted for software development. To follow the waterfall model, one proceeds from one phase to the next in a sequential manner. For example, one first completes requirements specification, which after sign off are considered set in stone. When the requirements are fully completed, one proceeds to design. The software in question is designed and a blueprint is drawn for implementers (coders) to follow this design should be a plan for implementing the requirements given. When the design is fully completed, an implementation of that design is made by coders. Towards the later stages of this implementation phase, separate software components produced are combined to introduce new functionality and reduced risk through the removal of errors . We can find that there are six stages need to go throw. It is requirement analysis specification, analysis, design, code and unit test, integration test staff training, system acceptance test . Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases . Listed below are selection criteria of choosing both the hardware and off the shelf software which we need to purchases. We need to consider about both assessment of supplier, assessment of contractual and assessment of technical . Supplier assessment The main criteria to consider when evaluating the suitability of the supplier organization are as follows : Financial: Financial strength, time in market place, market presence, future plans, number of employees, R D investment . Culture : Values, risk sharing, openness, commitment, responsiveness, strategy, ethos . Capability : Size, number of staff and skills, location, track record, availability of staff, size of user base . Management : Standards, processes for quality, change control, risk management, planning, control . Contractual assessment The main criteria to consider when evaluating the suitability of the contract being drawn up between yourself and a third party supplier of the provision of goods or services are as follows : Financial : Pricing structures, penalty clauses, payment terms, disclaimers . Materials : Ownerships of materials, service level agreements, support and maintenance, change process . Personnel : Lines of demarcation, assignment of responsibilities, use of sub-contractors . Technical assessment The main criteria to consider when evaluating the technical capabilities of the proposed solution put forward by the supplier or organization are as follows : The product : Meets requirements, robust, sufficient features, adequate documentation, maintainable, capacity for growth . Modification : Is it needed, cost, support, how much, how easy, who will do it, time to do achieve, backup etc . Standards / quality : Does it match your standards, complies with standards and law, adequate resources, technical knowledge required . Xmen Movie Essays -- Film Movies

Xmen movie I am critiquing the movie â€Å"X-men†. This movie is based on a comic book and on an animated series. Both the animated series and the comic book revolve around mutants. These mutants often look human, however many look quite different than any normal human and also their powers are quite extraordinary. This creates one problem when converting to movie form. Make-up gadgets and special effects must be used so that our reality where the film is made may accurately reflect the reality where the film is set. Also, the characters from the animated series and the comic books all have personalities and physical features that the actors in the film must try to match. This is a difficult thing to do. Not only must the actors physically look like the character concept but they must also be able to play the correct personality. The movie also must keep in context with the animated series and the books. The sources both share a timeline and general background knowledge and stories that the movie must conform with. When you add this onto the feat of making a movie that is aesthetically and engaging for audiences you have a very tall order. For the most part however, the movie was successful in many of these areas. The special effects were well done in this movie. Storm’s power over the elements is well displayed. I believe that it is one of the high points in the movie when we get to see storm use her powers. Cyclops’s eye beam was also well done special effect wise. However the head gear that they used, while close enough to the original, was very bulky. This hindered the actors acting capability. Actors do a lot of acting with their faces and facial features. Entire messages are sent with the eyes. This did create some problems for Cyclops in the movie. The headgear, while it was aesthetically pleasing, should have been reduced somewhat in size in order to better see the actor’s features. Rouge’s powers are well displayed as well. At this point in the timeline she has not yet gained her super strength or power of flight. So that is one less problem. She still however has the power of pulling other mutant’s powers from them. This tends to be a case of simply overlaying the special effects onto her from the original. However the only power that she really takes advantage of is wolverine’s healing. The special effects on this part seemed realist... ...e well. The casting was quite difficult also due to the fact that the sources portray the X-men as being larger than life. For instance the average human is six heads tall while the average X-men is eight. However the X-men did tend to dominate over the few humans they encountered, making up for the loss in dynamisms. Most of the movie kept in context with the sources. The back-stories of the characters that were explored were mostly in sync with the sources. The only area where this was truly lacking was an obvious marketing attempt. The younger X-men that were at the academy at this point in time actually should have been long gone at this point. Both Kitty Pryde and Iceman for example were X-men long before Wolverine or Rouge. However as it is portrayed, there is even so much as a teenage romance blossoming between Rouge and Iceman. This was obviously done for marketing purposes in wanting to include as many X-men in the movie as possible. However, if they decide to make a sequel they will have to address this problem or diverge further and further from the time line of the original source material. All in all I liked the movie though and I thought it was rather good.

Agricultural Crisis in India

India’s Agriculture Crisis Indian is an agricultural country. Even while India’s industrial and services sectors are growing by leaps and bounds and where growth rate of agriculture as below 2% the fact remains that India still lives in villages. Over 50% of India’s population is supported by agriculture. Even industrial and services sectors are invariably entangled with the fortunes of agriculture due to various intricate forward and backward linkages. There have been ominous signs which showed that the Indian agriculture is in crisis.Unending chain of suicides by farmers in different parts of the country shows that everything is not well with agricultural sectors. Government of India is not sleeping over this crisis. National Commission on farmers has been constituted under the eminent Scientist Dr. M. S. Swami Nathan. He has recommended a comprehensive national policy for farmers to give an all round boost to the sector. However, it is sea sad state of affairs where government is busy in talking about superficial remedies instead of taking the concrete steps which is the need of the hour.More waivers of interests and rescheduling of loans do not address the real problem, which is’ why caused the farmers’ distress in the first place? ’ The main problem is the poor state of infrastructure in the country. For example, many farmers face a perennial problem due to poor rains in certain parts of the country and there is no proper irrigation to counter this factor. Most farmers are also not aware of the proper cropping patterns. The problem of faulty crop selection is also one of the major forces that drive farmers to poverty. Thus it is necessary to impart proper education to farmers and further develop infrastructure in rural areas. Developed India is possible with the attainment of growing, advancement of manufacturing and services sector. But prosperous India is possible only with healthy agricultural sector. The pride a nd confidence in farmers and farming needs to be restored. This alone can help agriculture grow like never before.

The Gift From The Greeks Essays - Sports, Religion, Free Essays

The Gift From The Greeks Essays - Sports, Religion, Free Essays The Gift From The Greeks The Gift from the Greeks The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia, in the Peloponnes. The most famous are the games that were held in Olympia in honor of Zeus every four years from August 6th to September 19th. Olympics have been a symbol of the camaraderie and harmony possible on a global scale. The gathering of athletic representatives from participating governments, even throughout the recent Cold War period, is proof that world unity is possible. It was a gift from the Ancient Greece The Pentathlon consisted of five events; the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, foot race, and wrestling. The Pentathlons, especially the successful ones, were often treated and even worshipped like gods. Because of their exquisite physiques, they were used as the models for statues of the Greek Gods. The superior athletic ability of these athletes affects the games even today. The twisting and throwing method of the discus throw, which originated in Ancient Greece, is still used today. The original events were even more challenging than those of today. The modern discus weighs in at just 5 pounds, one-third of the original weight, and the long jumps were done with the contestant carrying a five pound weight in each hand. The pit to be traversed in this jump allowed for a 50 foot jump, compared to just over 29 feet in our modern Olympics. Apparently, the carried weights, used correctly, could create momentum to carry the athlete further. Legend has it that one Olympian cleared t he entire pit by approximately 5 feet, breaking both legs as he landed. These legends, for all their blood, sweat, and tears, were awarded an olive branch from the tree behind the alter of Zeus when they won. Fortunately, the regions they represented were usually somewhat more grateful for bringing honor home. It was not uncommon for the victors to receive free food for life, money, or other valuable offers. They were often worshipped as gods and sometimes their sweat was preserved and sold as a magical potion. In the later years of the games, an additional event was added which signaled the end of the games and the return to the war ridden life of ancient history. Soldiers, adorned with a full body of armor weighing upwards of 50 pounds, would compete in a foot race. Unfortunately, even the apparent athletic ability of these soldiers could not prevent the fall of Greece to Rome in the middle of the second century BC. Under Roman rule, the Olympics began to lose its fervor until it was abolished in 393 AD by the Christian Roman emperor Theodosius I who most likely objected to the pagan rites associated with the Olympics. Some historians believe that even after the official abolishment of the Olympics, it may have survived for an additional 120 years. Its subsequent revival in 1896 was brought about by the discovery of the ancient stadium. Since that time, it has been held every four years, in accordance with tradition, being interrupted only for the two world wars. The competition of the nations in these events represents the age old competitive spirit of man. The need for people to take pride in something larger than themselves and feel as if they are part of a greater good. The Olympics, today as well as 3,000 years ago, offers a non-combative environment to do so.

Propaganda and its effects in 20th century product design Essay

Propaganda and its effects in 20th century product design - Essay Example This is highly doubtful, as history has shown that the art, architecture and design movements have been hopelessly and inexorably intertwined. In fact, it would not be incorrect to say that the historical events of the 20th century, especially wartime and political propaganda, have had a profound and lasting effect not only on design, but also on the art, architecture and other aspects that influence the major diaspora of society. The Main Contributions to Design in the 20th Century In the 20th century the countries that made the news most of all were invariably also the nations that made the most contributions to design. The early 20th century was dominated by the Modernist movement and mass production via machines. For practical purposes, the Bauhaus School in Germany (1919-33) made some major contributions to simple designs for articles of common use such as furniture that could be mass produced. Its attitude towards simplicity could be summarized by Ludwin Rohe’s assertion : ‘Less is More’. In direct contrast to it emerged the Art Deco movement of the 1920s, with its emphasis on traditional cabined-making skills and materials such as steel and bauxite, became out of the reach of the common man and was labeled ‘elitist’ as only the rich were able to afford these pieces. The two decades after the Second World War (1950-70) also called the Mid century Modern Era were dominated by influences from Scandinavia, Italy and the USA (www.thenewgallery.co.il). They sought not only to use lightweight material but also bright and vibrant colors, dispelling the drab years of the War just gone by. Organic materials such as leather, steel, vinyl and others have resulted in their widespread use and adaptability to meet the needs of almost any household furniture. Industrial strength materials may be used for sturdier applications. The Uses and Influence of Propaganda Propaganda may be defined as follows: â€Å"Propaganda is the deliberate, s ystematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist† (Jowett & O’Donnell, 2006). Although the use of propaganda has been made before- primarily by kings and queens in swaying the public’s perceptions on certain issues, the 20th century saw the use of this as a weapon in the armory of many a political leader. Take Lenin and Stalin for instance. They used propaganda to overthrow Czar Nicholas of Russia and bring to fruition the Communist or Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Undoubtedly there were some historical and economic circumstances that came to their aid, but it is the skill of these leaders in manipulating these circumstances in their favor that makes propaganda such a potent weapon. Indeed, even fashion styles owe their catching on to propaganda, as they are first sold to the opinion leaders and elite of society and then orders are booked for cloth as the new fashion catches on through eyes, ears and advertisements (www.historyisaweapon.com). Propaganda was also well used in the era of the Third Reich, with Joseph Goebbels being Hitler’s main protagonist. He used propaganda not only to make Hitler look like a Savior and the answer to all of Germany’s troubles, but also later to further the Fuhrer’s own private ideas of an Aryan society and the mass annihilation of the Jews in the Holocaust. Propaganda has had its uses in times of peace as well. For example, Hitler’s vision of a prosperous Germany after the War included that every middle class German family would be able to afford a Volkswagen- that is why advertisements of the day showed it as a family car. Similarly, propaganda has been used by the British to rally support for investing in Government Bonds to

Traditional Teaching Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Traditional Teaching - Essay Example rough the lessons, giving clarifications wherever necessary; 2) its adaptability to large classrooms in transmitting a wide body of knowledge to students of divergent skills; 3) efficiency in offering straightforward instructions and explanations; and 4) offering better test results by focusing on likely test questions and administering repetitive drills in order to reinforce memorization of facts and information. The disadvantages of the traditional method of teaching, however are that 1) it turns out more time consuming for students who are slower in digesting information; 2) it does not offer any solution to the students for their difficulties in memorizing and retaining information; 3) the knowledge gained is only basic and limited in scope, as the exploratory stage is entirely done away with; and 4) it is inflexible, putting all students at the same starting point, stuffing them with undifferentiated knowledge, without taking into account their differing capacities and interest in the subject taught. Therefore, the method only benefits willing and ‘better’ students, and is not found fit to kindle genuine interest for the subject. In a traditional classroom setting, therefore, the teacher becomes the focus of action, with importance being given to the ‘textbook’. The student is relegated to the sidelines, and is a passive pawn in the learning process. Remembering the correct answer is the priority, to which end, they are inundated with information, in which process, their analytical skills remain largely untapped and untrained. The sequelae or abnormalities of traditional pedagogy lead to several undesirable consequences. This system enshrines Behaviorism as an essential part of education, and does not consider the impact of a student’s mental makeup on the learning process. Looking at the learning process purely as a uni-dimensional phenomenon results in the following abnormalities. First, students are placed in different classes based on their

Henri Fayol Essay Example for Free

Henri Fayol Essay Henri Fayol (Istanbul, 29 July 1841 – Paris, 19 November 1925) was a French mining engineer and director of mines who developed a general theory of business administration that is often called Fayolism.[1] He and his colleagues developed this theory independently ofscientific management but roughly contemporaneously. Like his contemporary, Frederick Winslow Taylor, he is widely acknowledged as a founder of modern management methods. Biography Fayol was born in 1841 in a suburb of Istanbul, Ottoman Empire. His father (an engineer) was appointed superintendent of works to build the Galata Bridge, which bridged theGolden Horn. [1] The family returned to France in 1847, where Fayol graduated from the mining academy Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines in Saint-Etienne in 1860. In 1860 at the age of nineteen Fayol started the mining company named Compagnie de Commentry-Fourchambault-Decazeville in Commentry as the mining engineer. In 1888 he became managing director, when the mine company employed over 10,000 people, and held that position over 30 years until 1918. By 1900 the company was one of the largest producers of iron and steel in France and was regarded as a vital industry.[1] Based largely on his own management experience, he developed his concept of administration. In 1916 he published these experience in the book Administration Industrielle et Generale Publications[edit] Books, translated 1930. Industrial and General Administration. Translated by J.A.
